Despite the fact that this home was designed by a celebrated Australian design duo and has its roots firmly in the mid-century modern movement. Our clients sought a contemporary home, brought up to date with current construction techniques and design trends. Most significantly, the clients desired a simplified living environment that would transform their property into a beloved, forever home. The construction process presented all manner of complications at the outset - from the complexities of installing a series of steel beams at the rear of the house to crumbling brickwork. Despite the inherent challenges, we made a few unexpected on-site discoveries including concrete slabs under the original flooring with the perfect aggregate mix, which were restored and polished, making for a dramatic finish. They set the tone for a moody, monochromatic renovation which included the fabrication of a beautiful custom steel-framed front door, french doors from the entry to the kitchen/dining room and a bespoke, steel balustrade. Whilst the original structure remained fundamentally intact, we updated every aspect of the house from the electrical, plumbing and windows to the plaster and paint, with the architect specifying lime-washed plywood ceilings, natural, bush-hammered stone and dark-toned and custom kitchen cabinetry.
